Volunteering with Martlets

Your time is priceless. Whether you can volunteer with us for a few hours once in a while or a regular weekly shift, as part of #TeamMartlets you’ll play a crucial part in keeping your local hospice going.

Our volunteers help in many different areas doing a variety of essential roles from donations sorters to refreshment assistants for our patients. They’re people of all ages and backgrounds who want to give back to their community, learn useful skills and make new friends along the way.

Whatever your experience and skills, we’ll help you find a Martlets volunteer role that suits you. Below you’ll see the main areas people volunteer in but if you don’t see something suitable for you, you could still help us – perhaps in a way we’ve never thought.

Retail and trading

We have nine charity shops across the region – in Brighton, Hove, Lewes, Peacehaven, Rottingdean and Woodingdean.

If you love vintage, have a passion for fashion and enjoy serving customers then our shops are the place to be.  Each is unique, and they all have lovely friendly teams! But don't just take our word for it - come along to a taster session to go behind the scenes, chat to our existing volunteers and learn more about the benefits of volunteering.

Our distribution centre is the hub of our trading business, where donated goods are sorted and distributed to our shops. If you prefer working behind the scenes and enjoy team camaraderie, then this might be just the place for you.

It’s been really easy to fit volunteering around my studies. I wanted to make a difference to the lives of others.

Ruoqi – Retail Volunteer
I particularly wanted to work at Martlets as it is a local charity. I feel really appreciated every day.
Phil – Western Road Shop

Events and fundraising

There are lots of opportunities to volunteer at our events or with our Fundraising Team. We run lots of events throughout the year, so if you like meeting new people, are happy to shake a bucket, cheer loudly and get stuck in, then our Fundraising Team would love you to join them.

Our events are spread throughout the year – you can help out at all of them or one of them, it’s flexible and completely up to you.

Events not right for you? We still need your help! Whether it is a collection box that needs picking up, volunteering in our office or holding a collection bucket - there are plenty of other ways to get involved.

I enjoy volunteering, it’s so rewarding. I was so proud when I got my 5-year Long Service Award this year and it was the icing on the cake when I reached the finals of the Brighton Evening Argus Community Stars award for Volunteer of the Year in February.

Hospice and support services

Our hospice-based volunteers are integral to the functioning of the hospice and the care of the patients.

Their commitment to their roles and the ongoing service provided by the hospice is inspirational and of a vital importance to our patients and their families.

People here are so positive, it helps me to remember that life is for living and doing what you can.
Martine – Refreshments & Sow and Grow
I consider it a privilege to be of some help to people when they are going through hard times. It’s such a lovely place for the patients and I love being there.
