The In-Patient Unit at Martlets is a warm and friendly place, with 18 beds providing end of life care for men and women suffering from cancer and other complex diseases. This role sits within the In-Patient Unit reception and supports the work of the Ward Clerks and nursing staff.

Where: In Patient Unit Martlets Hospice, Wayfield Avenue, Hove BN3 7LW

When: Alternate Thursday evening 5pm-8pm and bank cover

Usual minimum commitment: A regular fortnightly shift and/or bank cover as and when required

 What you’ll be doing:

  • To carry out reception duties in an efficient, professional and friendly manner
  • Assist the Ward Clerk and carry out clerical work as requested
  • To greet visitors, ensure they sign in and out and escort visitors onto the ward when appropriate.
  • Answer and transfer calls
  • Use the computer, photocopier, and fax
  • Receive and process donations
  • Receive and process payments for visitor meals
  • Organise volunteer drivers
  • Organise ambulances when requested
  • Order and deliver newspapers on request
  • Understand the different clinical teams, their working patterns and who to contact
  • Deal with requests from the clinical team including speaking to GP surgeries
  • Book nurse shifts when requested
  • Supporting hospice “Lone Working”  procedures
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Maintain a neat and tidy work area

Your skills and abilities:

  • Previous reception or clerical experience would be an advantage but training will be given
  • Good communication skills
  • Confident in using a computer 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to use initiative when required
  • Be empathetic, caring and aware of the impact of bereavement
  • Be reliable and adhere to all aspects of Health & Safety
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff/volunteers and the general public
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to seek guidance when required
  • To have a non-judgemental, emotionally mature approach to working with patients and their visitors
  • To be resilient to the nature of Hospice care and self-aware of the emotional aspects of this role.


  • To commit to a regular shift
  • Induction may need to take place during different shifts to the ones you will be continuing with.
  • You will have patient and family contact in this role. As such, you will need to be sensitive to their needs, maintain confidentiality at all times and to support Ward Clerks and clinical staff with requests.
  • To adhere to guidelines, protocols, policies and procedures of the Hospice
  • You will need to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service Check
  • Attend the Martlets Welcome Day and other relevant training
