The In-Patient Unit at Martlets is a warm and friendly place, with 18 beds providing end of life care for men and women suffering from cancer and other complex diseases. This role sits within the In-Patient Unit reception and supports the work of the Ward Clerks and nursing staff.

Where: In Patient Unit, Martlets Hospice, Wayfield Avenue, Hove BN3 7LW

When: Sunday 1-5pm (fortnightly) 

What you’ll be doing: To carry out reception duties in an efficient, professional and friendly manner

  • To greet visitors and escort them onto the ward when appropriate.
  • Answer and transfer calls
  • Use the computer, photocopier and fax
  • Receive and process donations and payments for visitor meals
  • Occasionally organise volunteer drivers and ambulances
  • Order and deliver newspapers on request
  • Deal with requests from the clinical team

Your skills and abilities:

  • Previous reception experience would be an advantage but training will be given
  • Good communication skills and confident using a computer
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Be empathetic, caring and aware of the impact of bereavement
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff/volunteers
  • Ability to work independently and seek guidance when required
  • To have a non-judgemental, emotionally mature approach.
  • To be resilient to the nature of Hospice care and self-aware of the emotional aspects of this role.


  • To commit to a regular shift
  • Induction may need to take place during different shifts to the ones you will be continuing with.
  • To be sensitive to the needs of patients and family and maintain confidentiality
  • To adhere to guidelines, protocols, policies and procedures of the Hospice
  • You will need to undertake a Disclosure and Barring service Check
  • Attend the Martlets Welcome Day and other relevant training
