Our volunteers provide an essential service to our patients by offering refreshments to them and their visitors. This invaluable role enables our medical staff to concentrate on their clinical work and helps support a welcoming and friendly environment for those staying at the hospice.

Where: Wayfield Avenue, Hove, BN3 7LW (there is free onsite car parking and a local bus stop close by)

When: Sundays and/or Thursdays, committing to a weekly or fortnightly shift

 What you’ll be doing:

  • Preparing and serving drinks to patients and visitors (a full list is provided)
  • Collecting the crockery after the morning drinks and place in the dishwasher
  • Leaving the ward kitchen clean and tidy
  • Laying up the lunch trays and serving them to patients as directed by nursing staff
  • Interacting with the nursing team if required, particularly if you notice a patient needs assistance

Your skills and abilities:

  • To be sensitive to the vulnerability of our patients
  • To work well as part of a team or by yourself
  • Reliable and good time keeper
  • Good communication and listening skills
  • A reasonable level of fitness as you will be required to stand, push a trolley and serve trays 

Expectations:

  • Induction may need to take place during different shifts to the ones you will be continuing with
  • You will have patient and family contact in this role, as such, you will need to be sensitive to their needs and maintain confidentiality at all times
  • To adhere to guidelines and procedures of the Hospice
  • You will need to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service Check
  • Attend the Martlets Welcome Day and other relevant training
