At Martlets we don’t just care for patients – we’re here for you too.

Whether you need practical support with caring for your loved one, advice with money matters, a bit of pampering, or just someone to talk to – we can help.

Social and welfare support

Social work

Our compassionate social workers are here to support you and your family through any practical problems, emotional distress, financial difficulties or concerns about your children’s wellbeing. They’ll meet with you at the hospice in a quiet, private space. You can see them alone, with your partner or with your whole family – however you feel comfortable.


Welfare support

Many people don’t realise that they’re entitled to financial help when they’re facing a serious illness. Our benefits advice team can sit down with you and your family – in your home or at the hospice – and ensure you have the help you need.

Counselling and emotional support

It’s quite a big job being a carer 24/7 and it’s so important that Martlets offers services to carers as well as patients. It’s nice to have that connection with life beyond being a carer, it’s very beneficial for me.

We shape your care around what you need. Many people simply want someone to talk to who understands them, others may want more in-depth pyschological support. Whatever your needs, our expert team of counsellors and social workers will support and guide you in a way that suits you. They will help you to process what's happening and offer you the emotional tools and support you need.

Many people find it helpful to talk through their worries with our counsellors. Your counsellor will help work out the best way to support you in a safe and confidential setting.


Support for families and children

Our counsellors can help everyone in the family – and they are experts at providing emotional support for children. This support could be providing specialist one-to-one sessions at the hospice, working with the whole family or having supportive conversations over the phone – whatever is best for you and your children.


Spiritual support

We welcome people of all faiths and beliefs at Martlets. If you need 'an ear to listen', spiritual advice, religious guidance, or wish to explore what is meaningful to you, our chaplain can meet with you. If you’d like to see your own faith leader while you’re staying at the hospice, we’re happy to arrange this too.

You’re welcome to visit our community Sanctuary at the hospice, at any time. It’s a peaceful space where you can sit, think, meditate, pray and 'be'. You’ll find a collection of holy books and inspiring readings, a space to write prayers and to light a candle. There’s a children’s reading corner with toys and teddy bears.



Our bereavement service offers support to the family and friends of patients who have received care from Martlets - whether that's in the hospice itself or out in the community. 

Bereavement support and advice is available to all family and close friends of loved ones who were cared for by Martlets. Please contact the Bereavement Team on 01273 273400 and ask to speak to the Patient and Family Support Administrator or email: if you would like to find out more.

Individual support

Our expert team of counsellors and trained volunteers will do their best to support your individual needs. We provide both one-off and ongoing sessions with our counsellors, which are held at the hospice. Our team of specially trained bereavement volunteers are also able to visit you in your home.


Time to Remember

Time to Remember is an event we hold at the hospice to allow family and friends to remember their loved ones. It is also an opportunity to meet others bereaved around the same time as you and to join in remembering your loved ones together. We will invite you to a Time to Remember event around 6 months after the death of your loved one.


Social evenings

Launched in 2017, we are holding monthly social evenings as an opportunity to meet others who have been bereaved, to make friends and to find a way to enjoy moments at a time of deep pain and loss. We will invite all local friends and family to come to our monthly social evening around 6 months after the loss of their loved one.

Earthworks allotment group

We host a weekly space for bereaved men to meet and share their experiences of loss with the opportunity to tend the allotment on Mondays throughout the year.

Funded by Hospice UK, Earthworks is a weekly space for the men to get together to grow and harvest an abundance of vegetables, flowers and fruit.

Led by a hospice counsellor and a volunteer gardener; it’s a welcoming and supportive environment in which to work, whilst enjoying getting outside in the fresh air.

Remembrance events

Light up a Life

In the run-up to Christmas every year we hold a service where we remember our loved ones who have died and light candles to celebrate their lives. Pebble Memory Walk

A new event launched in 2017 run by the hospice Fundraising Team, open to all, and led by our Chaplain Nicholas Roddis. An opportunity to step back from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and focus on the tranquillity of a new morning as you remember loved ones at sunrise.

Respite care

If you need to go to the shops, take a holiday, or simply get a full night’s sleep, our experienced carers can take care of your loved one – giving you a bit of time for yourself.

Martlets' respite care can be anything from a couple of hours once a week to overnight stays. Your carer will come to your home, sit and chat with your loved one, help with personal care and prepare a light meal if needed.

If you need a longer break, there’s also the option of having up to five days respite care through our inpatient unit at Martlets.
