Where: In Patient Unit, Martlets Hospice, Wayfield Avenue, Hove BN3 7LW

When: Either Sunday 1-5pm (fortnightly) and Sunday 5-8pm (weekly)

 What you’ll be doing:

  • Carrying out reception duties in an efficient, professional and friendly manner
  • Greeting visitors and escorting them onto the ward when appropriate
  • Answering and transferring calls
  • Using the computer, photocopier and fax
  • Receiving and processing donations and payments for visitor meals
  • Occasionally organising volunteer drivers and ambulances
  • Ordering and delivering newspapers on request
  • Dealing with requests from the clinical team

Your skills and abilities:

  • Previous reception experience would be advantageous but training will be given
  • Good communication skills and confident using a computer
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Be empathetic, caring and aware of the impact of bereavement
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff/volunteers
  • Ability to work independently and seek guidance when required
  • To have a non-judgemental, emotionally mature approach
  • To be resilient to the nature of Hospice care and self-aware of the emotional aspects of this role


  • To commit to a regular shift
  • Induction may need to take place during different shifts to the ones you will be continuing with
  • To be sensitive to the needs of patients and family and maintain confidentiality
  • To adhere to guidelines, protocols, policies and procedures of the Hospice
  • You will need to undertake a Disclosure and Barring service Check
  • Attend the Martlets Welcome Day and other relevant training
