We are launching Earthworks – our first open-access bereavement group for men this November. This is following a successful pilot at a community allotment.
The first 12-week course will begin on 4th November 2019. Spaces are available for any local man who has lost a loved one. Unlike other groups we run, no previous connection with Martlets is necessary.
The Earthworks course will take place on mornings, afternoons, evenings and on Saturdays at Martlets’ new allotment in Hove. The new allotment is complete with a shed and wood burner.
The sessions will be led by a hospice counsellor and a volunteer gardener. It will provide a welcoming and supportive environment for men to get together. At the group they will grow and harvest vegetables, flowers, and fruit.
Previous gardening experience isn’t important to join the course and it is free to attend. Men are encouraged to take on jobs that interest them from lighter work in the greenhouse or getting involved in digging and clearing.
Jane Cato from the hospice’s Bereavement Team said
“Less than a quarter of those using Martlets hospice bereavement services are men and there are limited opportunities for bereaved men to get together in Brighton & Hove. We developed Earthworks as an alternative way to provide support since we know we can help them.
“We wanted this group be open to every man in our local community who has lost a loved one, not just those who have been involved with Martlets. We would urge people to get in touch if they feel that this might be of benefit, the group is very relaxed; each morning begins with a cuppa in the allotment shed around the wood burner. “
