Our team of experts are here to make sure you and your loved ones have everything you need.

Welfare benefits advice

Many people don’t realise that they’re entitled to financial help when they’re facing a serious illness. Our benefits advice team can sit down with you and your family – in your home or at the hospice – and ensure you have the help you need. They can give you practical support with:

  • Finding out what you’re entitled to
  • Applying for benefits and grants – such as completing forms, making phone calls or writing letters
  • Accessing help with health costs, such as travel to hospital
  • Applying for transport concessions, such as a disabled parking badge
  • Acting on benefits appeals and decisions

How to access this service: If you’re a patient or carer already under our care, you can contact our benefits advice team directly:
Elizabeth Brown, Benefits Advice Service Co-ordinator 01273 273400 or liz.brown@martlets.org.uk

Social workers

Our compassionate social workers are here to support you and your family through any practical problems, emotional distress, financial difficulties or concerns about your children’s wellbeing. They’ll meet with you at the hospice in a quiet, private space. You can see them alone, with your partner or with your whole family – however you feel comfortable.

How they can help you

  • Supporting you with practical matters like arranging care services, housing and any financial issues
  • Having someone to talk to in confidence about your feelings or concerns
  • Ensuring that your family and friends are looked after and that anyone in a carer role will have the support they need
  • Advising you about welfare benefits and referring to specialist welfare benefits advisors if needed
  • Giving advice and information about how to support children. For example, how to talk with children about what is happening and how to plan for the future.

How to access this service:
If you’re receiving care from Martlets – in your home or at the hospice – you, your family member or a friend can book an appointment to see our social workers. Simply speak to a Martlets nurse or call us on 01273 273400. Most people book appointments in advance, but our team also try their best to be flexible and respond when you need them.
