This 5 day programme will provide an opportunity for Registered Nurses working in all care settings to explore and integrate into their practice the philosophy and principles of palliative care. There will be an emphasis on how the theories taught in the classroom can be linked to the reality of everyday practice. The course will focus on the importance of how nursing care can enhance comfort for people at the end of life. 

Areas to be covered include:

  • Principles and philosophy of palliative care
  • The Gold Standards Framework (GSF)
  • Advance care planning
  • Individual end of life care plans
  • ‘One chance to get it right’
  • The importance of effective communication skills
  • Reflective practice
  • Holistic assessment of care, physical, psychosocial and spiritual
  • The management of total pain
  • Palliative care emergencies
  • The management of fatigue
  • Care of the carers
  • How do we recognise when a patient is dying?
  • Spirituality
  • Symptom management
  • Bereavement issues
