Sheila has just celebrated a year volunteering with #TeamMartlets! We're proud to have her as part of the team and grateful for all the time she dedicates to Martlets.

We asked her why she volunteers for us:

“To give something back because what the Hospice give is so great.

They looked after my husband Denis twice and after 44 years married and 46 years together my world just fell apart. It took me two years to pluck up the courage to volunteer. I had never done shop work in my life I had always worked in an office but thought I’d give shop work a go. I went into the shop on Blatchington Road and had a trial day to see if I liked it and I haven’t looked back. Maria is very supportive and very understanding.

I feel lucky to work there. We all have strengths and weaknesses and I love to work with the ladies. My week isn’t complete until I’ve had my day at the shop. I get the best of both worlds, because of my experience working in a government department I get to do an hours office work then I make the tea for the ladies and the rest of the time is on the shop floor. I never leave on time because I never look at the clock.

We’ve all got three or four hours to give however busy our lives are. I wish I’d helped years ago.
My family all say that me volunteering for Martlets is the best thing that could of happened to me. It opened up a whole new world for me”.
