Hospice vacancies

End of life Companion Volunteers

Occasionally, people who come into the hospice to die, do not have family or friends able to visit and be present. We are developing a service to further support someone in these circumstances by providing a constant human presence throughout this time.

We are recruiting a team of volunteers who will provide uninterrupted company, dignity and peace during someone’s last days and hours of life.

The service is likely to be infrequent- approximately every six-eight weeks- and when it is required it will be immediate and intensive. Each volunteer will usually be called in for four hours per 24 hours on rolling shifts throughout the duration of someone dying. Full training and supervision will be offered. Please see the role description for full details.

Application process

After initial application and informal interview, successful candidates will be invited to take part in five introductory training sessions which will include: Hospice Philosophy & Practice, grief and bereavement, complimentary therapies and spiritual practices. Training will take place on:

21 Sep 09.30- 2.30

28 Sep 18.00-20.00

5 Oct 18.00-20.00

12 Oct 18.00-20-00

22 Oct 10.00-14.00

Final selection of volunteers will be made after this training.

Applicants need to be over 18 and have experience and/or training in any aspect of holistic care for people who are facing death. This is NOT a nursing role. For any further information and questions, please contact the chaplain, Nicholas Roddis (01273 273 400).
