Working with schools and colleges
Many local schools and colleges conduct some form of fundraising for the Hospice with resulting donations ranging from £30 to well over £1,000 per school. Every contribution makes a difference to us as we try to cover the costs of continuing our services and we value the opportunity it gives us to tell people of all ages about the work we do.
Many schools and colleges have become involved because they know someone we have cared for in recent years such as a teacher, lecturer or a student's parent or grandparent. All participating schools and colleges have supported us because they recognise the value of our work to the local community.
We are immensely proud of the support we receive from schools and colleges in our operating area and we are constantly looking to extend the numbers we work with.
We work with schools and colleges in two ways:
1. Education
We are keen to visit schools and colleges to talk about the work we do and we are also happy to arrange for children and students to visit the Hospice at any time. We can tailor our presentations to any age group from infants to sixth formers and mature students and to any format including class seminars, study groups and assemblies.
Hospice Education Resource Packs
The hospice movement has produced two free education packs for use by schools:
1. Education pack for 11 to 14 year olds supporting the Citizenship Curriculum.
2. Sixth Form lesson plan suitable for 16 to 18 year olds.
Both packs are available to schools free of charge from Help the Hospices by telephoning 020 7520 8220 or they can be downloaded from http://www.helpthehospices.org . We would encourage you to request a free pack and then contact us to discuss how we can support its delivery. We are very happy to help in a number of ways including talking to students about our work at your school or the Hospice. Please contact Clem Hunnisett, Schools Liaison Officer on 01273 747455 email: clem@themartletshospice.co.uk
2. Fundraising
Schools and colleges fundraising provides an important and substantial source of our annual income. We work with many schools and colleges year after year and we are always looking to build relationships with those we haven't worked with before. A list of those Schools and Colleges who have raised funds for our work since 1 April 2004 is linked below.

There are lots of ways for schools and colleges to support the Hospice as follows:
- by selling Hospice beanies to students. Beanies are popular especially with younger children, they sell for only a few pounds and raise funds for the Hospice. Beanies are available at Christmas and Easter. We can deliver the beanies to you and call again to collect any money and unsold stock.
- by running an event or series of events to benefit the Hospice. This could include taking collections or proceeds from ticket sales at plays, concerts etc which are already a part of your activity calendar.
- by running special events such as non-uniform days, fancy dress days, sports days or sponsored activities.
- by inviting us to sell hospice merchandise (such as greetings cards and beanies) by bringing our information trailer or running a stall at your summer fete, open day, freshers fair or other event.
We can support your efforts in a number of ways:
- by providing lots of fun ideas and advice for events
- by designing and supplying posters and flyers to help publicise your event
- by providing official Hospice sponsorship forms for your use
- by sending a representative to talk to students about our work
- by attending any event including cheque presentations
