When you are facing a serious illness we recognise that for both you and your family, there may be many different problems and challenges. These can include practical problems that you are facing now or in the future, as well as emotional distress, financial difficulties, or concerns about your children’s wellbeing. Our social workers are available to help and support you to cope with these problems.
How does the service work?
People can be seen on an individual basis, in couples or the whole family including children depending on what is required.
People are normally seen in the Hospice rather than at home. Appointments are made in advance–although sometimes we can respond to more immediate needs as they arise. We try to be as flexible and responsive as we can, knowing how important your needs are for you and your family.
How can our social workers help?
They can offer advice and advocacy regarding practical matters (such as arranging care services, housing, financial and other concerns.
They can offer support to help you cope with difficult feelings and fears, together with help when facing sensitive conversations with family and friends
They can provide opportunities to talk in confidence about any concerns you may have, including how your illness is affecting so many aspects of your life
They can provide advice and support for family/friends involved in providing your care – as we understand that the needs of people in a caring role can easily be under-acknowledged, leading to isolation, exhaustion, frustration, worry and guilt
They offer welfare benefits advice (and can also refer to Specialist welfare benefits advice if required)
They can also offer advice and information about how to support children, for example how to talk with them about what is happening and address fears or worries as well as planning (practically and emotionally) for the future.
How do I get in touch with a Martlets Social Worker?
If you are a patient under the care of Martlets Hospice (either on the Inpatient Unit, or with the Hospice at Home) then you, a member of your family or a friend can contact us directly at the Martlets Hospice or ask any member of the Multi-professional team to let us know that you want to speak with us. The staff who are looking after you may also talk to you about the benefits of speaking to a Martlets Social Worker for additional support and they can make a referral on your behalf.
