Physiotherapy in Palliative Care is about prolonging the onset of disability by maximising independence for as long as possible, minimising symptoms of illness and relieving the side effects of treatment. Physiotherapy assessment is holistic, and encompasses both body and mind, thereby promoting quality of life within the limits of the illness.

We have two experienced Senior Physiotherapists – Sallie Dawson and Ruth Edwards – covering the InPatient Unit and the Day Hospice, so all Martlets patients have access to our physiotherapy service. “Physiotherapy is now recognised as an essential service in Palliative Care. Patients find it very empowering as it looks at regaining control, whether that is managing pain or breathlessness or maintaining or improving their independence, thus helping patients adapt to their condition.” explained Sallie Dawson.

Physiotherapy can offer the following:

  • Increased mobility – walking re-education, measuring and supplying appliances eg. frames, crutches, sticks
  • Individual exercise programmes – strengthening weak muscles, improving flexibility, decreasing stiffness
  • Breathing exercises
  • A therapeutic and lifestyle management approach to breathlessness
  • Transfer education and practice eg. sit to stand, bed to chair
  • Management of pain, heat and cold therapy, TENS, increasing awareness of what aggravates pain
  • Anxiety and panic management
  • Fatigue management
  • Normal movement, positioning and passive movements
  • Acupuncture
