The Hospice Trustees

The charity Trustees are the people who together are responsible for controlling the management and administration of the charity. The Trustees make decisions and work together through meetings of the Board of Trustees.

The Boards of Trustees may also be known by a variety of different names, such as Boards of Directors (if the charity is also a company limited by guarantee), management committees, executive committees, executive councils and councils of management.

The Martlets Hospice is a charity (registration number 802145) and is also a company limited by guarantee and the Board of Trustees are known as the Board of Directors.

The Role of the Hospice Board

The Board is legally accountable for the activities of the hospice. The role of the Board has five main parts:

1.                  To lead the hospice and ensure it has a clear purpose and an overall framework of policies and standards.

2.                  To develop overall strategies to achieve the aims and to ensure that there is a clear system to delegate the implementation of the strategies to the staff team.

3.                           To monitor the progress of the hospice and to ensure that it provides the highest quality of care which is balanced with the effective, efficient and economic use of hospice resources and assets.

4.                     To ensure compliance with the law and accountability to the hospice’s stakeholders including the local community.

5.                          To ensure that the Board itself performs effectively, contains people with the skills and experience it needs and makes plans to ensure the recruitment, induction and development of new trustees.
